From 350 bar to 2 bar: Hydrogen pressure control for asphalt plant trial

Overview

FT Gas Control was selected by Heidelberg Materials to supply a hydrogen pressure reduction system (PRS) for a hydrogen trial at an asphalt production facility in Wales.

The project formed part of Heidelberg Materials’ ongoing efforts to use lower-carbon technologies and alternative fuels as part of its wider decarbonisation strategy. Having previously worked with Hanson, now part of Heidelberg Materials, on a hydrogen-fired clay brick project, FT Gas Control was chosen to support this latest hydrogen trial.

Project at a Glance

  • Client: Heidelberg Materials
  • Location: Wales
  • Application: Hydrogen trial for asphalt production
  • Scope: Supply of hydrogen pressure reduction system (PRS)
  • Inlet Pressure: 350 bar
  • Outlet Pressure: 2 bar
  • Purpose: Controlled hydrogen supply for process burners
  • Outcome: Successful completion of hydrogen trial

The Details

For the trial, hydrogen was supplied via a high-pressure trailer storage system, filled to 350 bar. The hydrogen needed to be transferred safely and reliably from trailer storage to the asphalt production process at a significantly reduced operating pressure. The gas was transferred through docking stations before entering the FT Gas PRS, which was a bespoke design for the site and had a flange rating of Class 2500. The PRS reduced the hydrogen pressure from 350 bar to 2 bar, providing a controlled and consistent supply for the trial operation. Following pressure reduction, the hydrogen was supplied to process burners used in the drying stage of asphalt production, supporting Heidelberg Materials’ assessment of hydrogen as part of its wider decarbonisation programme.

Result

The hydrogen trial was successfully completed and the client was very happy, demonstrating the capability to safely decant and manage hydrogen from high-pressure trailer storage for industrial use.
