Successful decarbonisation trials at Worthing Crematorium using FT Gas technology

FT Gas recently supplied a twin-stream Gascat gas pressure reducing system to one of the successful projects, HyCrem, on the government’s £57.5 million Industrial Fuel Switching (IFS) Programme, which funds the development and demonstration of innovative fuel switch solutions. The IFS is part of the £1bn Net Zero Innovation Portfolio which provides funding for low-carbon technologies and systems. HyCrem involves the decarbonisation of Worthing Crematorium, the third busiest in the country, by fuel-switching from natural gas to hydrogen.

Successful trials of the new technology concluded recently and, as expected, there has been a huge amount of interest in the project. FT Gas has featured in broadcast, print and online media for its design, build, delivery, installation and commissioning of the twin-stream gas pressure reducing system. FT Gas Control Systems’ Engineering Manager, Gareth Eades (pictured above left), was interviewed by a journalist from one of Britain’s broadcast media about the leading role played by FT Gas.

The trials demonstrated, at scale, that natural gas can be replaced by hydrogen in a working crematorium while still maintaining the same level of service. The dual system was precautionary, offering a back-up option in the unlikely event one was needed. The proposed new process uses green hydrogen, which is produced using electricity from renewable sources, to power the cremators. Unlike natural gas, hydrogen doesn’t give off carbon emissions when burnt. Green hydrogen is also produced without any carbon emissions.
